Hospital President Receives Elon University Honors

The president and chief executive officer of Alamance Regional Medical Center received Elon University’s highest honor for business leadership Wednesday, according to Elon officials.

John G. Currin Jr. received the Frank S. Holt, Jr. Business Leadership Award at a campus luncheon with more than 100 people in attendance.
 
“I am very thankful and deeply humbled, and I feel very fortunate to even have a place in this room today,” Currin said, in a press release.

Currin has been the organization's president since 2005. He was vice president for operations from 1986 to 1989 and executive vice president and chief operating officer from 1989 to 2005 before that.

Alamance Regional Medical Center Recognized for Lactation Services

Alamance Regional Medical Center Recognized for Lactation Services

Alamance Regional Medical Center was recently recognized by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants for lactation services, according to hospital officials.

The hospital has received the IBCLC Care Award and is one of seven hospitals in North Carolina to be receiving the honor.

Facilities who receive the award hire certified lactation consultants and have a dedicated lactation support program available five to seven days a week, according to a press release.

Facilities must also provide training for nursing, medical and other staff that care for breastfeeding families.

The Birthplace at Alamance Regional Medical Center has certified lactation consultants available for breastfeeding consultations for all new mothers, officials said.

Alamance Regional CEO receives award

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) - John G. Currin Jr., President and CEO, Alamance Regional Medical Center, was recognized for his contributions to health and healthy workplace policies by NC Prevention Partners at the organization’s annual meeting held June 8. Currin received the POWER Award.

“Our award recipients are making it easier for every North Carolinian to make healthy choices and we are proud to honor their work,” says NC Prevention Partners President and CEO Dr. Meg Molloy.

Currin has served on the NC Prevention Partners Board of Directors for four years.  He was recognized for brining Work Healthy America to Alamance County and serving on the planning team for a Prevention Academy.  Work Healthy America helps businesses create worksite wellness programs.

PARC Passports are Back

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -  Alamance PARC (Physical Activity & Recreation Challenge) Passport Program is back again this year as a way for families and friends to come together and explore recreational activities right in their own neighborhood.

“We were very pleased with the contagious enthusiasm and high number of passports that were requested last year,” stated April Durr, Healthy Alamance Director.

Green Thumb Produce Market Now Open

Green Thumb Produce Market is open at 1874 N.C. 54 in Burlington at the former home of The Fruit Shack, according to the Burlington Times News.

Owners Matt Wells and Michael Wheeley offer produce, local all-natural meats, jarred goods, local crafts, plants, herbs, perennials, small shrubs and mulch and pinestraw.

Business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Alamance YMCA Competing in National Contest

Alamance YMCA Competing in National Contest

The Alamance County Community YMCA is a candidate for the LiveStrong Community Impact Project and is competing to bring cancer support programs to the community.

The organization is competing against hundreds of other organizations for the award, according to the Burlington Times News.

The finalists will be determined through voting. Voting can be done at http://vote.livestrong.org.

If selected, the Alamance County would use the award funds to implement the Livestrong program locally.

Flu Shots to be Provided for Shelter Dogs

Dogs at the Burlington Pet Adoption Center are now getting canine flu immunizations, according to the Burlington Times News.

The vaccinations are made possible from of a grant from the Petfinder.com Foundation, according to the Burlington Times News.

Burlington Animal Services received 2,000 doses of the vaccine and administered 200 doses to dogs preparing to go to the center last month, the paper reported.

The canine influenza virus is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily from dog to dog. Its symptoms include coughing and a fever.

The canine virus is a growing problem and has been confirmed in 35 states, according to a Burlington Animal Services.

The Petfinder.com Foundation grant for Building Community Immunity is meant to protect all at-risk dogs, especially ones at shelters, the paper reported.
